Frederica Academy boys soccer team lost 1-0 to Westminster School in Saturday’s GISA state championship game.
The lone goal was scored on a long shot, 30 yards away, that just got over the outstretched arms of John Michael Brock with less than 14 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Knights had some scoring opportunities, but the Westminster defenders blocked many of the shots. Westminster, which has won five Class 3-A soccer titles, also defeated the FA boys in last year’s championship game.
Knights coach Tim O’Sullivan said the return trip after Friday’s semifinal win for Saturday’s graduation ceremony at 9 a.m. didn’t help. The players spent seven hours on a bus going to and from Mercer University in Macon on Friday, then had another 3 1/2 hour drive to return for the championship game.
“We don’t make excuses,” he said. “It is what it is. Graduation is really important, too."
