Protesters want the monument honoring dead Confederate soldiers removed, claiming it represents hate. But for me and others of my persuasion, it represents heritage and should be left alone. The “hate” accusation requires judging the 19th century by 21st century values.

Removing the monument might temporarily placate protesters but many of us will long regret the loss of this century-old historical artifact.
