Thomas Gaines Ellington Jr., 85, of St. Simons Island passed away Nov. 26, 2018.
He was born Nov. 5, 1933, in Thomaston, Ga., and attended Robert E. Lee High School, where he was a standout student and athlete (football and basketball). Tom earned a four-year scholarship to Georgia Tech, participating in the co-op program and graduating with a B.S. in textile engineering.
Tom had a long and successful career with DuPont. His career took him to Wilmington, Del., Akron, Ohio, Tokyo, Japan, and New Delhi, India. He also served in the U.S. Army at Fort Belvoir.
He is survived by his two daughters, Robin Lynn Ephraim (David), of Sugar Land, Texas, and Dr. Janet Ellington-Reed (Earl), of McDonough, Ga.; and Shirley Petersen, their mother.
Also surviving are his two grandchildren, Jason Ephraim (Jenny), of Houston, Texas, and Jordan Ephraim, of Sugar Land, Texas, who affectionally called him Pop-Pop. Tom was also blessed with two great-granddaughters, Eve Charlotte Davidson and Blair Mackenzie Davidson, both of Sugar Land, Texas. His surviving sibling is Joyce Pickren (Buzzy); nephew, Michael Mower; and niece, Nancy Warner, all of St. Simons Island, Ga.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Ellington.
Upon his retirement from DuPont, Tom and Judy built their home in the Island Club at Retreat.
He began a real estate career and enjoyed his co-workers in the Sea Palms Real Estate office. Tom thoroughly enjoyed playing golf and ended his working career as a starter with the Sea Island Golf Club.
Haisten Funeral Home, in McDonough, Ga., is handling the arrangements.
The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.
