A Virginia Gentleman has left us.
Robert Bear Sprouse died at his home with family and friends on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018.
Bob was born Sept. 7, 1933, in Staunton, Va. He was a son of the Rev. Dr. W. W. Sprouse and Lila Bear Sprouse. He was a graduate of the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He served in the U.S. Army and after, attended Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va. A member of the American Insurance Institute, he started his insurance career with the Travelers Insurance Co. in Nashville, Tenn., where he met his wife Barbara, and they were married Feb. 4, 1961. He joined The American Southern Insurance Co. and transferred to New Orleans, La., Atlanta, Ga., and Orlando, Fla., then returned to Nashville, Tenn., with the Richard M. Miller Insurance Agency.
Having an independent and entrepreneurial spirit, Bob started his own insurance brokerage company, Public Risk Managers, with offices In Brentwood, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga., which he later sold, just prior to retiring full-time to their marsh home on St. Simons Island in 1996. Bob was an active volunteer for Fort Frederica Monument, Coastal Georgia Historical Society, president of the Friends of the Brunswick/Glynn County Library, and Seafarers International. He was also an active contributor to the William and Mary Alumni Fund, and sponsored several students enrolling at W and M. He also enjoyed membership in St. Simons Rotary International.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Casey Sprouse; his son, R. Warren Sprouse and wife, Lauri Jennisch, of Iowa City, Iowa; his daughter, Sally Shaw Sprouse and husband, Jim Roche, of Mariposa, Calif.; a sister, Caroline Ghebelian of Maryland; as well as three nephews. Bob is preceded in death by a brother, W. Warren Sprouse; and sister, Martha S. Stoops.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later time.
