Lawrence Howard Certain, 65, died peacefully Saturday, April 21, at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, with his wife, Vicki, and family members by his bedside.
Mr. Certain was born Nov. 2, 1952, in Columbus, Georgia, to the late Lyle Harvey Certain and Elizabeth Rainey Certain. His family relocated to the Golden Isles in 1954, where he lived and was a member of the Glynn Academy Class of 1970. Mr. Certain attended Brunswick College before transferring to The University of Georgia (UGA) where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism (A.B.J.) from the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication in 1974. Two years later, he received a Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication (M.A.) from the Grady College at UGA.
Lawrence had a long and passionate career in advertising, beginning in 1977, when he co-founded and served as Vice President at Melton Advertising, Inc. in Augusta, Georgia. From 1980-1987, Lawrence was Executive Vice President at Unger Associates with offices in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. In 1987, Lawrence returned to the Golden Isles and became partner and co-owner of Faulkenberry Certain Advertising Inc., where he worked faithfully for over 30 years. Lawrence took great pride in serving the needs of local, regional and national clients throughout his career in advertising. He was a passionate writer and frequently contributed to local publications which delighted readers with his creative storytelling.
Lawrence was a proud and active resident of the local community where he served on many boards and organizations including Friends of Coastal Georgia History; Golden Isles Arts & Humanities Association (Founding Member); Frederica Academy Board of Trustees; St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Vestry; Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce; St. Simons Rotary Club; Coastal Georgia Historical Society; Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia and the Five Grands, Twenty Hands Concert Series. He was an active member of other organizations including Gridiron Secret Society, Escort’s Club, Sea Island Club, Mozart Society, University of Georgia President’s Club, University of Georgia Heritage Society, American Advertising Federation and countless other civic and professional organizations.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his mother and father, Elizabeth and Lyle Certain.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 20 years, Victoria Walters Certain; and his five loving children, Matthew Edward Certain of St. Simons Island, Helen Certain Rentz (Jeff) of St. Simons Island, Megan Victoria Plohocky (Ryan) of Jacksonville, Florida, Kevin Patrick Crotty (Brittany) of St. Simons Island and Blake Anthony Crotty of West Palm Beach, Florida. Lawrence is also survived by his stepmother, Betty Hamlett Certain; sister, Donna Certain Nilsson (Neil); nine grandchildren (Libby, Margaret and Sarah Certain; Turner and Miles Rentz; Colton and Lily Plohocky; and Drew and Ellie Crotty) and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews.
Lawrence Certain’s life will be celebrated at a funeral service to be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church on St. Simons Island, with the Rev. Thomas Townsend officiating. The family will receive visitors at 1 p.m. in the church parish hall prior to the service. Honorary pallbearers are Tommy Bryan, the Hon. John S. Dalis, Steve Hurlbutt, Randy Jordan, Jim Mitchell, Stewart Pittman and Bill Tipton.
