Gene Murrell, 72, of Waycross, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, at Satilla Hospice in Waycross.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, at Chapman Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chip Strickland officiating.
A reception for family and friends will follow at the funeral home.
Honorary pallbearers will be Shelly Erdmier and Jennifer Williams-McGee,of the Cancer Center of Southeast Georgia Health System, and Linda Suggs-White, of Coastal Nephrology.
Gene was born February 13, 1946, in Washington, D.C., to George Dewitt Murrell and Muriel Marie Copple Murrell. He was a graduate of Washington-Lee High School, in Arlington, Va., and served with the United States Navy in the active reserves. Coming from Arlington, Va., he had lived in Southeast Georgia since 1978, living in Waycross for the past year.
He retired from FLETC in 2006 as a firearms instructor. During the holidays, he enjoyed playing the role of Santa, lighting the Christmas tree for six years, during the Annual Tree Lighting on Jekyll. He enjoyed woodworking and cowboy re-enactment with the Single Action Shooting Society.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Linda Murrell; children, Corey Murrell (Brandie), of Folkston, and Kris Murrell, of San Diego, Calif., granddaughters, Delaney Blake Murrell and Paislie Kate Murrell; a sister, Karen Foreman; and nephews, Wayne Foreman (Karen), and Scott Foreman (Kathleen), all of Atlanta.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to Satilla Hospice House, 811 Beacon St., Waycross, GA 31501.
