A memorial service for the late Dr. Charles Edward Simmons is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, at Zion Baptist Church, 1611 G St., Brunswick, Ga., with the Rev. Craig B. Campbell officiating. A repast will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.

Charles Edward Simmons was born March 18, 1943, to Benjamin and Evelyn Simmons, in Brunswick, Ga.

Charles received his high school education from Risley High School, in Brunswick, Ga. He served three years in the U.S. Army, from 1961-1964. He received his B.S. degree in mathematics and physics from Morehouse College, master’s degree from U.C.L.A., a Ph.D. from U.S.C., and after retirement, he received a B.A. and a master’s in business from University of Redlands.

Upon graduation from Morehouse College, Charles moved to Los Angeles, Calif., to further his education. He was employed by Rockwell International Space Division (NASA). He was a member of the STS System team that was instrumental in the deployment of the first space shuttle. After 35 years of employment, Charles retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Delores Matthews.

He is survived by his wife, Robbie; children, Charles Edward Simmons Jr. (Brenda), Charnetta Simmons Abuel, Ursula Evelyn Simmons and De’Andrue Simmons (Elizabeth); grandchildren, Charles III, Charleise, Robbie, Markella, Saniya, Charnetta Faith, Bettessia, Devon and Tarik; his aunts, Annie Mae Bordeaux and Ida Lee Bennett; his uncle, Edward Simmons; three brothers, Benjamin (Willa), Dr. Earnest (Ursula) and Larry; one sister, Edith Hunter; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and other family members.

During his youth, Charles worshipped at Zion Baptist Church in Brunswick, Ga., and later united with First Baptist Church of Pomona Calif.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association, at www.alz.org.

William “Billy” Bryan Maxwell, 70, of Brunswick, who had a smile for everyone he met, and a warm sense of humor he shared with all, departed this life peacefully Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, with his wife by his side.

Robert “Slim” Owen Logue, 80, joined his Heavenly Father on Monday, Feb. 11, 2019.
