Carl Warren Brown, Sr., was born to the late Edward Brown and Maria L. Anderson-Lewis on January 31, 1932 in Savannah, Ga.

He graduated from Beach High School in Savannah, Ga. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army for two years. After serving in the U.S. Army, he began his college studies at Savannah State College, receiving a B.S. Degree in Physical Science at which time he met Evella Simmons in 1950. After a courtship of seven years, Carl and Evella were married in Effingham County Courthouse in 1957.

He later attended Armstrong State College, receiving a M.S. in Biology. He also received his Masters of Education from Georgia Southern University.

Mr. Brown was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Savannah, Ga., before joining St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church in Darien. He was a teacher, Assistant Principal and Assistant Superintendent for the McIntosh County School System for more than 30 years.

After retiring from the McIntosh County School System, he was employed by the McIntosh County Tax Assessor’s Office. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and served as Senior Warden at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church for many years.

Mr. Brown transitioned on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital in Savannah, Ga.

He leaves to mourn one son, Carl W. Brown, Jr.; brother, Robert Lewis; sister, Estelle Gilman-Bey; one godchild, Mario L. Spaulding; two sisters-in-law, Retha Simmons and Willie Mae Aikens; one brother-in-law, Larry (Rose) Simmons; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

A wake will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Darien Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018, at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church in Darien, with the Rev. Bill Barton officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens in Glynn County.
