Betty Jo “Dodie” Hammond Bowen, of St. Simons Island, Ga., died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Ja. 11, 2019.

She was born in Greensboro, Ga., on May 3, 1930, and grew up in Atlanta, where she graduated from NAPS (Westminster), and then attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Coll Bowen Jr.; and her mother, Mary Askew Hammond.

She is survived by her children Kathy (Ed) Battle, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Coll (Sally) Bowen, of Sea Island, Ga., Allyson (Ed) Callison, of Chicago, Ill., and Tom (Mary Grace) Bowen, of Cartersville, Ga.; and by her sister, Pat (Dick) Sage of Richmond, Va. She was loved by 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She spent 55 happy years of marriage to Frank before his death in 2006. Together they raised a family in the Sandy Springs area, where she was involved in many civic organizations from PTA to DAR and the Dunwoody Wednesday Afternoon Club.

Dodie and Frank retired to Sea Island, Ga., in 1989, where enjoying visits from family and bridge at Ocean Forest Club were among her favorite pastimes.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 in the chapel at Spring Hill, 1020 Spring St., NW, Atlanta, GA 30309. Interment will follow the service in Westview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dodie’s memory should be made to Shepherd Spinal Center, 2020 Peachtree Road, NW, Atlanta, GA 30309.
