ATLANTA (AP) — Police in Georgia say a man stopped on Interstate 285 to help a stranded driver and was fatally struck by several cars. News outlets report DeKalb County police say the man was killed late Monday.

Authorities didn't immediately release his identity. Police spokesman Sgt. J.D. Spencer says a vehicle had stalled in the center westbound lane and the 36-year-old victim got out of his car to help.

Spencer says an oncoming car swerved around the stalled vehicle and hit the man. Spencer says it appears several cars hit the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the involved vehicles stayed at the scene near Buford Highway and no charges have been filed. Several lanes were closed and began opening up early Tuesday.
