GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A husband and wife were arrested early Monday in north Georgia and charged with murder in the death of a 2-year-old girl they were babysitting.

Juan Martinez, 31, and Nancy Martinez, 32, were being held without bond at the Hall County jail on murder and first-degree cruelty to children charges, news outlets reported. It was not immediately clear if they had lawyers who could comment on the charges.

The couple was watching the toddler Sunday at a Gainesville home while her parents were at work and caused her to suffer “traumatic brain injury and other internal injuries,” Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Officer Derreck Booth told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Emergency responders answering a medical call around 1:50 p.m. Sunday took the girl to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. She was then transferred to a Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta location, where she died, Booth told the newspaper.

The toddler's body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for an autopsy. The sheriff's office continues to investigate her death.
