Vietnam veterans sought for parade

Organizers of the Veterans Day Parade on St. Simons Island are looking for more Vietnam veterans to participate in the parade.

The parade will start on Monday in Mallery Park at 10:30 a.m. and proceed to Neptune Park. A Veterans Day ceremony will begin in Neptune Park at 11 a.m.

Walter Caldwell, himself a Vietnam veteran, said they hope to style the parade like a welcome home celebration for participating veterans.

“Veterans who have served their country, with boots on the ground, in the air or at sea or who supported our mission are invited to attend this observance on Monday, Nov. 12, on St. Simons Island,” Caldwell said.

Anyone wishing to participate in the parade should arrive at Mallery Park by 10 a.m. and assemble around a truck with a mounted sign reading “Vietnam combat veterans.”

Despite the combat veteran banner, Caldwell said any and all are welcome.

“There will be many support personnel walking with us. We would be honored to have anyone and everyone who worked in a support role walk behind our banner,” he said.

Hospice of the Golden Isles will offer a barbeque for all veterans following the ceremony.

Anyone looking for more information should call Caldwell at 912-638-5997.
