The number of registered voters has reached an all-time high, according to the Glynn County Board of Elections staff.

A little more than 60,000 people are currently registered to vote in Glynn County, according to Elections and Registration Supervisor Monica Couch.

Couch said the election office is also likely to hit a record number of absentee ballots for a midterm election.

During the 2014 midterm election, the board sent out 1,076 absentee ballots and got 830 back. Couch said she didn’t know how many absentee ballots the board sent out for the 2010 midterms, but the number they got back indicated it was close to 1,200.

As of Tuesday, it had sent out 1,200 and had gotten 230 back. Both numbers will likely grow as the 2018 midterm election is still two weeks away, Couch said.

The deadline has passed to register for the Nov. 6 elections, but registered voters can still request absentee ballots. Couch recommended applying for an absentee ballot as early as possible to leave enough time for the ballot to arrive through the mail.

To get an application, visit the board of elections’ website at, call the board at 912-554-7060 or pick one up from the board’s office in the Office Park Building, 1815 Gloucester St. in Brunswick. Once filled out, applications can be sent to or dropped off at the board’s office, or faxed to 888-870-1374.

Couch said some people have attempted to forge signatures when helping others fill out absentee ballots. Signatures on submitted ballots are compared to past signatures, and board of elections staff can generally tell when a signature has changed with time and when it is forged, she said.

Elections staff take into account people who may not be able to fill out ballots on their own. The mark of the person the ballot is intended for will suffice and a separate line is given for the signature of the person assisting, Couch said.

“Just be honest,” Couch said.

Elections staff are more than willing to answer questions about absentee ballots. They can be reached at 912-554-7060.
