The Gathering Place will host its annual internship opportunities for local high school students this summer. Applications are open until April 30.

The Gathering Place, a leadership development youth ministry in Brunswick, will offer a Doulos internship this summer to rising high school juniors and seniors that aims to help students gain leadership skills and to encourage community involvement.

The eight-week summer program is a workforce development initiative that pairs high school students with professional job sites and gives them a chance to gain work experience and to work with mentors.

“We’re learning, but outside of the classroom setting,” said John Williams, director of campus ministry for The Gathering Place. “The word ‘doulos’ is a Greek word that means ‘servant,’ and so it’s a servant leadership program.”

Interns will be selected after an interview process, and they will receive a compensation package for the summer that includes a stipend and a kick-off retreat in Dayton, Tenn.

“We’re trying to encourage them to be more of a leader in their community,” Williams said. “We teach them basic skills and we try to encourage them to feed off each other, to have a positive impact on their campus when they go back, and in their community in which they live.”

The Gathering Place partners with local businesses, where interns work 12 hours per week.

“Then they’ll be with us the remaining time,” Williams said. “We teach them leadership skills, we teach them Bible skills, we teach them interaction skills, we teach them community service incentives — just a number of things to try to encourage them to take some ownership in the community.”

The Gathering Place will also offer a Summer Leadership Experience for rising ninth through 12th-grade students. Interns will spend three days a week organizing the weekly Main Event programs, engaging in leadership development and participating in community service projects.

Students can apply for both internships by visiting The Gathering Place’s website at thegp.org. Applications can be found under the “Internships” tab.
