Sea Island’s plan to build a new beach has come under fire from some in the community. On Monday, appeal were filed on behalf of environmental organizations to overturn the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Shore Protection Committee’s recent decision to allow the construction to move forward.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says there are no plans to re-hear a permit request from Sea Island Acquisition to build a second groin off the beach of the private island.

State Rep. Alex Atwood, R-St. Simons Island, said DNR Commissioner Mark Williams notified him of the decision in a letter dated Jan. 12.

Atwood and Rep. Jeff Jones, R-St. Simons Island, had requested the Shore Protection Committee rehear the application, which it approved during its December meeting.
