County police respond to Neptune Park visitors in picnic area
Glynn County Police officers responded to a situation on St. Simons Island Saturday after a group of visitors to the park ignored construction fencing and caution tape around the picnic area in Neptune Park.
Lt. Rick Evans, commander of the county police department’s St. Simons precinct, said Monday that officers asked the visitors to leave, which they did without resistance.
Glynn County Commissioner Peter Murphy said it was “irresponsible” for the park visitors to put themselves and children at risk when the picnic area was clearly roped off.
The county’s Public Works department roped the picnic area off last week after multiple branches fell from two historic live oaks. The most recent limb broke a concrete picnic table, which led county leadership to consider the trees a possible threat to public safety.
The county is currently waiting for feedback from experts before making a decision about what to do with the trees. Murphy hopes to have a solution in hand by the end of the month.
