The newly formed Planning and Appeals Commission for the city of Brunswick voted Wednesday to adopt its bylaws.
The PAC is a two-prong board made of five members and two alternates that will review issues such as zoning changes and development site plans.
It will then make recommendations to the full city commission, which has ultimate authority to accept or reject the PAC’s suggestion. Issues like lot splitting, subdivision development and annexation fall under the planning role of the PAC. The PAC can also make other planning-related recommendations to the City Commission.
In its second role as an appeals body, the PAC will make decisions about variances. If city staff deny a property owner or developer the ability to deviate from city zoning laws, the applicant can go before the PAC. The PAC has the authority to overrule city staff and grant variances. If the PAC refuses to grant a variance, the applicant can appeal to State Court. The city commission does not have a say in the appeals role of the PAC and cannot overrule it.
The next meeting will be at 5 p.m. August 8 at City Hall, 601 Gloucester St., Brunswick.
