The hustle and bustle of the holidays has arrived. For many, Thanksgiving unfolds in a busy kitchen surrounded by family and friends, as an ample spread is prepared for the annual meal.
It is a time-honored tradition and while that’s precisely how many in the Isles will spend their day — there are other options. Whether it’s due to travel or personal issues, some people won’t be able to cook for themselves. Others simply don’t want the headache.
For those, several local resorts are offering up Thanksgiving buffets, allowing patrons to partake in the holiday sans preparation and clean-up. Over on Jekyll Island, Edson Vizcarra is preparing for his first holiday as the director of food and beverage for Holiday Inn Resort Jekyll Island.
“I have worked in the area before, in fact, I opened the Westin here on Jekyll Island so I have some experience. I have learned what the locals and guests are looking for and what they like,” Vizcarra said.
“We have people who come over from Brunswick as well as from Atlanta and the Carolinas.”
For holidays like Thanksgiving, that is a fresh, home cooked feel. At the Beach House buffet, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, there will be brunch items as well as hot lunch staples.
“We will have mashed potatoes and multiple carving stations with ham, prime rib and of course, turkey. We will have green beans and squash,” he said.
“We will also have also be doing a salad bar which will have two types of greens with toppings and already made salad Waldorf and ambrosia. We will have dessert station with holiday pies along with mini desserts.”
The Beach House’s buffet costs $30.95 for adults and $14.95 for children ages 6 to 12. It is free for those under 6. Vizcarra recommends that those interesting in dining there make reservations ahead of time. Those may be made by calling 912-319-0033 or booking online at opentable.com.
“We are taking reservations of course any one can walk in ... we will find a place for them. Right now, our busiest times range from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. but we have slots available,” he said.
While Vizcarra will be manning the Beach House, other area resorts are offering similar options for guests and locals.
The Jekyll Island Club Hotel annually holds a Thanksgiving meal. This year their brunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the grand dining room. It costs $49.95 for adults and $24.95 for children under 12. It’s other properties, Crane Cottage and Eighty Ocean Kitchen and Bar, will also be serving brunch for similar prices at similar times. Those are outlined online at www.jekyllclub.com.
Of course, the state owned island doesn’t have the monopoly on offering Thanksgiving dinners. The King and Prince, over on St. Simons Island, has been serving up a Thanksgiving feasts for years.
Their meal includes a brunch at Echo with breakfast and hot lunch items available. Traditional fare like turkey with giblet gravy will be paired with mushroom stuffed beef tenderloin with a cabernet reduction.
It will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. within the resort at 201 Arnold Road, St. Simons Island. The cost is $69 for adults and $25 for children ages 6 to 12. There’s no charge for those 5 and under. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 912-268-5967.
