Catherine Hillis, a resident of St. Simons Island, was the only artist from the southeastern United States selected to participate in the Sedona Plein Air competition in Sedona, Ariz., from Oct. 13 to 20.

Hillis won the Seven Canyons Guerilla Painter Award for best painting at Seven Canyons Resort.

The painting is titled “Overwhelmed at Seven Canyons.” The judge was Carl Judson, plein air painter for 30 years and owner of Judson’s Art Outfitters in LaPorte, CO. Hillis completed 11 paintings during the event. She travels frequently across the country and has won hundreds of awards throughout the years for her watercolor paintings. She currently serves as a board member for the Georgia Watercolor Society and teaches classes and workshops in the community and abroad.
