A 17-year-old Brunswick High student died from a gunshot wound suffered late Sunday afternoon at Eagle’s Pointe Apartments off Crispen Boulevard, Glynn County Police chief of staff Brian Scott said.

Xantavian Pierce was transported by ambulance to Southeast Georgia Health System’s Brunswick hospital, where he died, Scott said. Police have not positively determined the circumstances surrounding Pierce’s death and whether it was an accident or he was intentionally shot.

“An autopsy will be conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Lab in Savannah,” Scott said Sunday night. “This investigation is in the early stages, and the circumstances surrounding the manner of Mr. Pierce’s death are still being investigated.”

Glynn County Police and county paramedics responded to reports of a shooting shortly before 5 p.m. at the apartment complex, Scott said. They located Pierce inside one of the apartment units with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, Scott said.

Pierce was a standout member of the Brunswick High basketball team, according to reports in The Brunswick News.
