Last year, Frederica Academy needed a little help to win the GISA Region 2-3A title. A win Friday on the road at Edmund Burke Academy is all the Knights require to repeat as region champions.
Frederica went 3-1 in region play last year, tied with Pinewood Christian. Since the Knights had beaten Pinewood, the title went to them. But entering their final game, Frederica needed Bulloch Academy to lose its last two games and that’s exactly what happened.
This year, Frederica’s playoff destiny is square in its hands. The Knights avenged last year’s loss to Bulloch with a 28-21 victory last week. That win made Frederica 5-2 on the season and more importantly, 3-0 in region play.
Edmund Burke enters Friday’s contest with a 5-3 record overall and a 1-1 mark in region play. A win by the Spartans Friday night could set up a similar waiting game for the Knights. If Edmund Burke wins out, they would tie the Knights for the region title and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Edmund Burke enters the game coming off a 26-0 win over Westfield in non-region play. The Spartans have lost to Bulloch in region play, 17-0, but beat Pinewood 33-9.
Last year’s meeting between the Knights and Spartans took place after Hurricane Matthew ravaged Coastal Georgia. Frederica picked up the win in dominating fashion, 34-7. Kickoff for today’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Waynesboro.
