College of Coastal Georgia may have switched leagues, but expectations haven’t changed for the Mariners.

Coastal was picked as the favorite to win The Sun Conference in its first season in the league in the conference’s preseason coaches’ poll. The Mariners are entering The Sun having won three straight tournament championships in their former league, the Southern States Athletic Conference.

Coastal received five of nine first-place votes and 58 total points. Defending Sun regular season and tournament champions Webber International were picked second, garnering two first-place votes and 53 points.

St. Thomas garnered the other two first-place votes and was picked to finish third. Warner, Keiser, Southeastern, Ave Maria, Johnson & Wales and Florida Memorial round out picks four through nine.

Coastal head coach Leah Mihm has eight returning starters from last year’s squad. Mihm is in her second year leading the program.

The Mariners began their preseason camp Monday at Howard Coffin Gym on campus and will host an alumni game on Saturday at the gym. Coastal will scrimmage itself on Aug. 22 before starting the season for real at the Billy Marshall Invitational in Grand Island, Neb., on Aug. 25.
