Thank you to The Island Players and their new president, Jeff Dempsey, for showcasing the incredible talent of our community in their production of “Smokey Joe’s Café.” This delightful show was the longest running of its kind on Broadway. Director, Gail Butler, has brought together a fantastic cast of talented singers for an unforgettable performance of song and dance.

Almost fifty years ago, The Island Players was a part of our family’s choosing to move to St. Simons because of my wife’s interest in community theater. Over the years, I have been to many performances. This is the first time that I will be returning for an encore performance. I wanted to stand up and applaud the whole time. It’s that good! The lady sitting next to me commented that this performance was even better than when she saw this show on Broadway. Anyone who misses it is missing a real treat.

It is great to see the community coming together, working together, having fun together, and putting on a great show together. It is inspirational. Powerful singing voices of both experienced and new performers, fun choreography, and snazzy costumes make for a fantastic show. It is amazing that a community of this size has such impressive talent.

The show starts Thursday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 pm at the Casino Theater and reservations are required for the opening performance. There are eleven performances running Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 3:00 pm with the final performance on October 22. I will be surprised if the theater is not filled every time.

This is the first time that I ever have recommended a show. It is astounding, I cannot believe what they have done! I promise you will not be disappointed!
