Mainland planning commissioners approved four site plans for new buildings at the Canal Crossing Shopping Center on Canal Road to accomodate seven new businesses, as well as a site plan for a grocery store in Sterling.

Three of the site plans detailed plans for buildings on free-standing lots: a Moe’s Southwest Grille, Hooters restaurant and a four-tenant building. The site plan for the four-tenant building indicated T-Mobile, Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Five Guys Burgers and Fries, which have all already signed on to occupy the building.

The fourth Canal Crossing site plan was for an extension to the main building on the Academy Sports end. An extension to the building will accomodate Five Below, a discount store.

MPC members also recommended the Glynn County Commission approve a rezoning request for property across the street from the shopping center.

The requested rezoning would change the current planned development text over the property to one that closely resembled Canal Crossing’s plan development text.

The rezoning request also included a conceptual site plan, which was not up for consideration at the meeting, that included a shopping center for 14 tenants, a car wash and another standalone business.

There are also plans to expand more of Canal Road to four lanes, and expand Glynco Parkway from its intersection with Canal to U.S. Highway 17.

In other business, the MPC approved a site plan for a Satilla Grocery in Sterling. The store is locally owned, with another location near Nahunta. MPC chairman Gary Neville said the store would be good for the community, as there are not many places to shop there outside of a Parkers gas station.

The MPC also approved site plans for a new Boys & Girls Club facility, climate-controlled storage units for Victory Storage, renovations to the inside of the Arby’s restaurant on the Altama Connector, and a new Ole Times Country Buffet building. A preliminary plat for a subdivision off Ga. Highway 82, near U.S. Highway 17, among other things.

The next meeting of the MPC is not scheduled yet, but they are typically held at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every other month in the Old Glynn County Courthouse, 701 G St. in Brunswick.
