Auditions are scheduled for three upcoming performances by Golden Isles Arts & Humanities.

Two of the shows are Ritz Radio Theatre productions of “A Christmas Carol” and “It’s a Wonderful Life,” scheduled in December. Auditions will also be held for the February performance of “Shakespeare Variety Show.”

Kelly Hunter, assistant director of Golden Isles Arts & Humanities, said people attending auditions don’t have to read the scripts to try out for a role. She suggested people familiarize themselves with the stories and characters, however.

“A lot of people come in with a lot of familiarity for the roles,” she said. “It’s not a cold reading. You will have time to look at the script.”

There are no guarantees those auditioning will get the role they aspire to play. Many people show up to auditions and get assigned to roles after they read their lines.

“Usually, it works better if you can be as open as possible,” she said.

The two Christmas plays are based on old-time radio broadcasts, complete with sound effects and lots of interaction among the actors playing the roles on stage. Hunter said the radio shows are an easy way for aspiring actors to perform because they will have their scripts in front of them and won’t have to memorize lines.

Rehearsals for the Christmas plays start in October and for the Shakespeare play in early January. Some aspiring actors will audition for all three productions, Hunter said.

People will be asked to fill out a form when they show up to ensure they don’t have plans to be out of town during performances. Typically, several rehearsals are held each week, increasing in frequency as the plays get closer to curtain call.

Hunter said there is plenty of flexibility in rehearsals and actors don’t have to show up to every one of them.

Those interested in auditioning for a role in one of the plays should RSVP to info@goldenislesarts.org or by calling 912-262-6934. People are asked to put “Audition” in the subject line of the email.

Auditions for all the plays begin at 11 a.m. on Aug. 19 and at 6 p.m. on Aug. 21. They will be held at the Ritz Theatre, 1530 Newcastle St., Brunswick.

In addition to actors, people interested in backstage work, including props, costumes, stage management, set design and construction and other roles are needed. Those volunteers do not need to show up to the auditions. They can go to the website or call 912-262-6934 to volunteer.
