Passing the gavel was completed from outgoing president of St. Simons Island Rotary Club, Paul Pieschel, left, to 2017-2018 President, Dr. Robert W. “Bob” Brown. The installation ceremony was conducted by Dr. Hamsa Thota, district governor for District 6920, and past district governor Clyde Taylor. Both Thota and Taylor are members of St. Simons Island Rotary Club.
During 2016-2017, St. Simons Island Rotary Club membership was increased by a net over 4 percent. Members gave a total of $105,103. Funds donated included $20,556 to the Rotary Foundation, $2,767 to Polio Plus, $28,000 charitable giving to 14 local charities, $46,000 scholarship funds to 23 students, $800 to two students for Rotary Youth, $756 and food items to Child in Crisis, $1,224 to Roto Bucks for the Alzheimer’s Cart Project, $4,000 through a district grant for a literacy program and $1,050 for an International Grant for India.
St. Simons Island Rotary Club work included individual members actively involved in service above self. This was through Community Image Awards, a speech contest, Salvation Army Bell Ringers, RYLA Rotary Youth Leadership training for two students, scholarships for 23 students, flag sales, Vets Walk, club charities, literacy program, Taps at Twilight, a program that will bring a mobile dental clinic to Brazil and Paraguay, Happy School Global Grant Project in India and hosting a GRSP student.
Rotary International recognized St. Simons Island Rotary Club through a Presidential Citation. This was in recognition of the St. Simons Island Rotary Club’s outstanding strength and making a positive difference in our community through focus and increased humanitarian service and enhancing Rotary’s public image and awareness. Only five Rotary clubs in Rotary District 6920 received the Presidential Citation and it was personally awarded by the international president at its recent international convention in Atlanta.
